The Badger Cull

I see the Antis are as well informed as ever:

Telegraph - Badger protesters target country sports like hunting and shooting

“Forthampton shooting estate is as you probably know covered in footpaths. Making the sabotage of there business very very easy, if anyone walks along the footpaths during a shoot they have to break their rifles and wait for you to go."

Rifles, for pheasants, come on! Try a bit harder with your facts please. Probably the same logic they use to argue against the cull.

Ballistic FTE/AE App

Ballistic AE (FTE) just introduced what I think is going to be a game changer in terms of ballistics apps, Multiple wind entries:

iPhone Screenshot 2

You can now enter multiple wind speeds and  angles at different ranges and it will calculate a solution for you. This has been one thing I think has been lacking from ballistics software for a while.

UKV MQC

The Inaugural UKV Mendip Quarry Challenge took place on the 8th September 2012. Check out the write up on the UKV site. There are many events like this in the States but very few here in the UK hopefully the success of this one will inspire people to run similar events.

There is an appetite for this type of shooting in the UK we just need more venues to run the events.

Weather History

Having been to the Range this weekend and forgotten to fill out the Atmospheric details in my log book I though I'd try to find a weather history provider. This is what I found:

Weather History

Location specific and gives all the relevant info for shooters such as Barro Pressure, Temperature, etc.

Weekends are for Shooting

Weekends are for shooting, or if you feel like it, this weekend, watching shooting:

Saturday:

Women's 50m 3 Position Rifle

Women's Trap

Sunday:

Men's 50m Pistol

Men's Trap

Think I'd still rather be out shooting myself. Have a good weekend.

New UK Based Shooting Show

The International Shooting Show looks suspiciously like it's in direct competition or trying to out do the British Shooting Show. They're even on  consecutive weekends, 2&3rd Feb 2013 and the 9&10th respectively.

That being said, the more UK based shooting shows there are the better as far as I'm concerned. They could have spaced them out a bit more though.

Couldn't Have Said it Better Myself

The Voice of Reason.

Chris Williamson certainly isn't!

He is possible one of the most opinionated MPs when it comes to Anti-Fieldsports but is possibly the least qualified person to talk about them. His blog makes it quite clear he has no knowledge what so ever on the matter.

Pippa Mattinson, however certainly does. The link above is a response to his comments. I couldn't have said it better myself.

He is the MP for Derby North. Anyone in that constituency with an interest in fieldsports should be aware of his views. I certainly wouldn't be voting for him if he was a candidate for my constituency.

Updated: Top 10 Shooting apps

It's been a while since I posted that last top 10 and quite a lot has changed, and there are more apps available since then so it's time for an update.

Although the top 10 are still for iPhone (which is the best smart phone by the way) I have included a few at the bottom in the 'other to consider' section for Android and Windows Mobile etc.
The top 10 apps for shooters:

10. BulletFlight - Another ballistic app. Nice user interface and uses once of the most accurate ballistic calculators available but the high cost keeps it down at number 10 because it doesn't offer anything more than some of the cheaper ballistic apps.

9. Modern Weapons Small Arms - An encyclopedia of guns. Useful facts about most firearms that you never needed to know. Has come in useful for settling debates at the range a few times though. Only really covers military firearms. Would be better if it covered sporting firearms too.

8. Army Sniper - The U.S. Army’s official field manual in an app. Army Sniper includes over 800 pages of content.

7. Measure Map Lite - This is another non shooting app that can be used as a GPS range finder. Simply better and more user friendly than Histance and measures not just distance but area too. It allows up to 6 pins to be dropped simultaneously, if you need more than that you can upgrade to the paid version. There are no adds in the lite version the only difference being the limitation on umber of pins that can be dropped.

6. Shot Group Calculator - Take a pic of your group and then with a bit of drop and drag it will work out your group size and other useful statistics. A little bit expensive for what it is at £5.99 but still a nice app.

5. Wind Meter - This app works by directly measuring the volume of wind flowing over your iPhone microphone and converting it into an effective wind speed reading. Although it will never be as good as a dedicated anemometer, it is fairly accurate based on the comparisons I've done so far.

4. Density Altitude Calculator - The name pretty much says it all. Doesn't automatically get the information needed which would be a nice feature, so you need to have it all before and enter it manually, and doesn't accept humidity. Otherwise a great app for shooters, even without humidity it will get you reasonably close and hopefully the next update will correct for this.

3. ShotPlot - From the producers of iSnipe. A way of recording your shots/scores on a variety of different targets. It will also work out statistics, do mil-dot ranging and unit conversions. There are similar apps that do this but this one is by far the easiest to use.

2. Ballistic FTE - Has a good calculator and features. Once you get used to how it works, it is easy and quick to use. Has all the features (and more) of BulletFlight but at nearly half the price. Make sure you get the Field and Tactical Edition (FTE) with the HUD though.

1. Shooter - Simply the best ballistic app for the iPhone. The most user friendly. It's just so simple and nice to use, that why it gets the top spot. Doesn't have all the features of Ballistic FTE such as the range score cards which would be nice but does have a Ballistic Truing feature which non of the others do and is incredibly useful. This is also available for Android. I have used it on both IOS and Android and I have to say it is much better on IOS.

Others to Consider

Applied Ballistics Mobile Application - From the brains behind Shooter. Soon to be number one I think but since it's only available for Android at the moment I haven't had chance to try it. iPhone app coming soon. Watch this space.

Target Calculator - Measures your group by taking a picture of your target. For Android.

iDataBook - I've wanted an app like this for ages. A sort of target/sniper/shooter log book for your phone. You can log shots and range cards etc and has some nice features. However, I've heard it's very buggy and I'm not sure it is worth the price at about £20. I shan't be downloading it until I see some positive reviews or the price comes down.

Why They Were removed

iSnipe - The user interface is one of the best and it has some nice features as well as being very accurate at predicting elevation and windage out to long ranges. The latest updates have produced a bug that gives erroneous results when certain parameters are entered which makes it next to useless and why I have removed it.

Histance - Not really a shooting app but it can be used as a GPS range finder. Select a "New Location", choose the location on the map, drop the pin and it will tell you the straight line distance between you and the pin. And its free. Removed because Measure Map Lite is so much better in every way.

Ballistic Truing or Trajectory Validation

If a shooter doesn't have access to an accurate chronograph, doesn't know the exact BC, etc, they can still use ballistic programs to predict their trajectories by applying ballistic truing. This is when a ballistic solution is

Some programs such as Shooter have a built in feature to automatically true the data that is required to match your real world drop.

If a scenario exists where all the inputs cannot possibly be known with a high degree of certainty (as is commonly the case in some scenarios), then using conditioned

tweaked to match some real world data.

Lead Ban - Lobby Your MEP

Lobby your MEP on lead shot

Countryside Alliance Executive Chairman Barney White-Spunner urges you to get active on lead shot and lobby your MEP in our newly launched e-lobby.
The debate over lead ammunition has been running for many years now. Domestically, those that oppose its use have consistently failed to produce any proven scientific evidence to support a ban. Moreover, faced such a lack of evidence, they continually switch between environmental and health issues in their vain attempt at gaining public support.
A further threat comes from the European Union. The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) started to look into the issues of all uses of lead. As part of their research, they instructed a company to collect evidence as to the level of use of lead ammunition around Europe. This was responded to jointly by all the shooting organisations through FACE.
The Countryside Alliance believes that these threats on lead are unjustified. As far as the shooting community are concerned, those that want it banned have consistently failed to produce evidence that would support a ban. Granted, if someone finds and proves incontrovertibly that lead causes serious damage to health or wildlife then we are willing to talk. Until that point the status quo must remain.
We further believe this threat from Europe could be greater than the one we face domestically. Shooting throughout the United Kingdom would be disproportionately affected if there were a blanket ban on lead use across Europe. Our shooting is too important to the environment and the rural economy to be decided by Brussels, which is why I am proud to announce our new e-lobby. This will give all UK shooters the ability to lobby their MEPs on the issue of lead when it comes up in the European Parliament.
To lobby your MEP, just click here, it will only take a minute, but could secure lead for generations to come.

Iphone Anemometer

There's a new anemometer available for your iPhone:

17qdee2tw0kokjpg

http://shakaon.net/

This is a proper on and not just an app. It plugs into the headphone jack and will give wind and temperature readings.

It looks like a good bit of kit and almost certainly better than the apps that use volume to measure the wind. It would be much better if it had some sort of pressure sensor too to give barometric pressure readings or better still compute density altitude. I know you could get this via a data signal but your not always near a data signal when shooting and it would be much more convenient if it were built in.

I think I'll be sticking with my Brunton ADC for now. Also, I can't seem to find it available in the UK at the moment.

Could be potential for integration into one of the Ballistics Apps too?

I'm Back!

It's been a while since I've posted due to technical issues and a few other less technical things but I'm back now.

First of all, have you checked out the latest Target Shooter.
