Transonic Bullet Stability

Great article in 6mm-BR about Transonic Bullet Flight. Well worth a read.

Supersonic bullet shadowgraph

UPDATE:

There is a discussion on Varminting UK about which bullet/rifle combo's have been proven to remain stable through the transonic and into the subsonic stage. Read more here:

Another good blog site

Ryan's Range Report

There's an interesting article today on 6mm-BR:

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2015/04/ringing-steel-at-1500-yards-with-a-little-help-from-ab-kestrel/

Follow the link within the article to the blog site, it's well worth a look:

Some good videos on their YouTube Channel. I'm following quite a few good YouTube channels now, think that'll have to be the subject of a future post. Let me know if there are any you think are worthy of including and I'll do top 10 or something.

I've updated the links page too.

Gear Reviews - Blog site

This is without a doubt one of the most interesting and informative websites I have ever found on shooting:

Great blog for gear reviews with real world test results. The level of detail they go into and the range of gear tested is unsurpassed.

There is a particularly good test one tactical scopes. Also, good information on what the people who are winning are using.

This website is like a book you can't put down. I'm hooked.

Does Barrel Twist Rate Affect Muzzle Velocity?

There is a good write up on 6mm-BR today of an extract from Bryan Litz's new book Modern Advancements in Long-Range Shooting.

Does Barrel Twist Rate Affect Muzzle Velocity?

The results are surprising. 5 fps for a 4" change in twist.

I've also found out you can now get some of Litz's books on a kindle.

Lapua's New Products Brass

Lapua will introduce 3 new cases to its brass line up in 2015:

  • 300 AAC Blackout (300 BLK)
  • 7mm-08 Rem
  • 8x57 JS

I'm specifically interested in the 7-08. I’ve just received my 7-08 and I’ll be doing a reloading guide for it soon.

Lapua hasn’t updated its new products page yet but read more at 6mm-BR.

The Badger Cull

I see the Antis are as well informed as ever:

Telegraph - Badger protesters target country sports like hunting and shooting

“Forthampton shooting estate is as you probably know covered in footpaths. Making the sabotage of there business very very easy, if anyone walks along the footpaths during a shoot they have to break their rifles and wait for you to go."

Rifles, for pheasants, come on! Try a bit harder with your facts please. Probably the same logic they use to argue against the cull.

Ballistic FTE/AE App

Ballistic AE (FTE) just introduced what I think is going to be a game changer in terms of ballistics apps, Multiple wind entries:

iPhone Screenshot 2

You can now enter multiple wind speeds and  angles at different ranges and it will calculate a solution for you. This has been one thing I think has been lacking from ballistics software for a while.

UKV MQC

The Inaugural UKV Mendip Quarry Challenge took place on the 8th September 2012. Check out the write up on the UKV site. There are many events like this in the States but very few here in the UK hopefully the success of this one will inspire people to run similar events.

There is an appetite for this type of shooting in the UK we just need more venues to run the events.

Weather History

Having been to the Range this weekend and forgotten to fill out the Atmospheric details in my log book I though I'd try to find a weather history provider. This is what I found:

Sunday:

Think I'd still rather be out shooting myself. Have a good weekend.

New UK Based Shooting Show

The International Shooting Show looks suspiciously like it's in direct competition or trying to out do the British Shooting Show. They're even on  consecutive weekends, 2&3rd Feb 2013 and the 9&10th respectively.

That being said, the more UK based shooting shows there are the better as far as I'm concerned. They could have spaced them out a bit more though.

Couldn't Have Said it Better Myself

The Voice of Reason.

Chris Williamson certainly isn't!

He is possible one of the most opinionated MPs when it comes to Anti-Fieldsports but is possibly the least qualified person to talk about them. His blog makes it quite clear he has no knowledge what so ever on the matter.

Pippa Mattinson, however certainly does. The link above is a response to his comments. I couldn't have said it better myself.

He is the MP for Derby North. Anyone in that constituency with an interest in fieldsports should be aware of his views. I certainly wouldn't be voting for him if he was a candidate for my constituency.

Updated: Top 10 Shooting apps

It's been a while since I posted that last top 10 and quite a lot has changed, and there are more apps available since then so it's time for an update.

Although the top 10 are still for iPhone (which is the best smart phone by the way) I have included a few at the bottom in the 'other to consider' section for Android and Windows Mobile etc.
The top 10 apps for shooters:

10. BulletFlight - Another ballistic app. Nice user interface and uses once of the most accurate ballistic calculators available but the high cost keeps it down at number 10 because it doesn't offer anything more than some of the cheaper ballistic apps.

9. Modern Weapons Small Arms - An encyclopedia of guns. Useful facts about most firearms that you never needed to know. Has come in useful for settling debates at the range a few times though. Only really covers military firearms. Would be better if it covered sporting firearms too.

8. Army Sniper - The U.S. Army’s official field manual in an app. Army Sniper includes over 800 pages of content.

7. Measure Map Lite - This is another non shooting app that can be used as a GPS range finder. Simply better and more user friendly than Histance and measures not just distance but area too. It allows up to 6 pins to be dropped simultaneously, if you need more than that you can upgrade to the paid version. There are no adds in the lite version the only difference being the limitation on umber of pins that can be dropped.

6. Shot Group Calculator - Take a pic of your group and then with a bit of drop and drag it will work out your group size and other useful statistics. A little bit expensive for what it is at £5.99 but still a nice app.

5. Wind Meter - This app works by directly measuring the volume of wind flowing over your iPhone microphone and converting it into an effective wind speed reading. Although it will never be as good as a dedicated anemometer, it is fairly accurate based on the comparisons I've done so far.

4. Density Altitude Calculator - The name pretty much says it all. Doesn't automatically get the information needed which would be a nice feature, so you need to have it all before and enter it manually, and doesn't accept humidity. Otherwise a great app for shooters, even without humidity it will get you reasonably close and hopefully the next update will correct for this.

3. ShotPlot - From the producers of iSnipe. A way of recording your shots/scores on a variety of different targets. It will also work out statistics, do mil-dot ranging and unit conversions. There are similar apps that do this but this one is by far the easiest to use.

2. Ballistic FTE - Has a good calculator and features. Once you get used to how it works, it is easy and quick to use. Has all the features (and more) of BulletFlight but at nearly half the price. Make sure you get the Field and Tactical Edition (FTE) with the HUD though.

1. Shooter - Simply the best ballistic app for the iPhone. The most user friendly. It's just so simple and nice to use, that why it gets the top spot. Doesn't have all the features of Ballistic FTE such as the range score cards which would be nice but does have a Ballistic Truing feature which non of the others do and is incredibly useful. This is also available for Android. I have used it on both IOS and Android and I have to say it is much better on IOS.

Others to Consider

Applied Ballistics Mobile Application - From the brains behind Shooter. Soon to be number one I think but since it's only available for Android at the moment I haven't had chance to try it. iPhone app coming soon. Watch this space.

Target Calculator - Measures your group by taking a picture of your target. For Android.

iDataBook - I've wanted an app like this for ages. A sort of target/sniper/shooter log book for your phone. You can log shots and range cards etc and has some nice features. However, I've heard it's very buggy and I'm not sure it is worth the price at about £20. I shan't be downloading it until I see some positive reviews or the price comes down.

Why They Were removed

iSnipe - The user interface is one of the best and it has some nice features as well as being very accurate at predicting elevation and windage out to long ranges. The latest updates have produced a bug that gives erroneous results when certain parameters are entered which makes it next to useless and why I have removed it.

Histance - Not really a shooting app but it can be used as a GPS range finder. Select a "New Location", choose the location on the map, drop the pin and it will tell you the straight line distance between you and the pin. And its free. Removed because Measure Map Lite is so much better in every way.

Ballistic Truing or Trajectory Validation

If a shooter doesn't have access to an accurate chronograph, doesn't know the exact BC, etc, they can still use ballistic programs to predict their trajectories by applying ballistic truing. This is when a ballistic solution is

Some programs such as Shooter have a built in feature to automatically true the data that is required to match your real world drop.

If a scenario exists where all the inputs cannot possibly be known with a high degree of certainty (as is commonly the case in some scenarios), then using conditioned

More information is available in this article:

tweaked to match some real world data.

Lead Ban - Lobby Your MEP

Lobby your MEP on lead shot

Countryside Alliance Executive Chairman Barney White-Spunner urges you to get active on lead shot and lobby your MEP in our newly launched e-lobby.
The debate over lead ammunition has been running for many years now. Domestically, those that oppose its use have consistently failed to produce any proven scientific evidence to support a ban. Moreover, faced such a lack of evidence, they continually switch between environmental and health issues in their vain attempt at gaining public support.
A further threat comes from the European Union. The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) started to look into the issues of all uses of lead. As part of their research, they instructed a company to collect evidence as to the level of use of lead ammunition around Europe. This was responded to jointly by all the shooting organisations through FACE.
The Countryside Alliance believes that these threats on lead are unjustified. As far as the shooting community are concerned, those that want it banned have consistently failed to produce evidence that would support a ban. Granted, if someone finds and proves incontrovertibly that lead causes serious damage to health or wildlife then we are willing to talk. Until that point the status quo must remain.
We further believe this threat from Europe could be greater than the one we face domestically. Shooting throughout the United Kingdom would be disproportionately affected if there were a blanket ban on lead use across Europe. Our shooting is too important to the environment and the rural economy to be decided by Brussels, which is why I am proud to announce our new e-lobby. This will give all UK shooters the ability to lobby their MEPs on the issue of lead when it comes up in the European Parliament.
To lobby your MEP, just click here, it will only take a minute, but could secure lead for generations to come.

Iphone Anemometer

There's a new anemometer available for your iPhone:

17qdee2tw0kokjpg

http://shakaon.net/

This is a proper on and not just an app. It plugs into the headphone jack and will give wind and temperature readings.

It looks like a good bit of kit and almost certainly better than the apps that use volume to measure the wind. It would be much better if it had some sort of pressure sensor too to give barometric pressure readings or better still compute density altitude. I know you could get this via a data signal but your not always near a data signal when shooting and it would be much more convenient if it were built in.

I think I'll be sticking with my Brunton ADC for now. Also, I can't seem to find it available in the UK at the moment.

Could be potential for integration into one of the Ballistics Apps too?

I'm Back!

It's been a while since I've posted due to technical issues and a few other less technical things but I'm back now.

First of all, have you checked out the latest Target Shooter.

Interesting article on 6mm-Br highlighting the dangers of shooting without a backstop. Really goes to show how such a small error can make such a big difference.

Government Response to the HAC Firearms Enquiry

The government has finally released it's Response to the Home Office Affairs firearms enquiry. What does it mean for shooters, NOTHING. essentially there will be no changes to the status quo apart from a possible increase in the application fees and updated guidance to the licensing authorities and police.

I suppose it is both good and bad. Good in that there will be no knee jerk response to the Cumbria shootings but also bad because of the lost opportunity to remove ridiculous parts of the various firearms acts that don't actually achieve anything. For example expanding ammunition and passing land for certain calibres.

October Update

Well, I've been away for a while again but this is what's happened whilst I've been offline:

The October Issue of Target Shooter is available free online

The October Issue of SSUSA is available free online

The new edition of The Rifleman's Journal it out

The fist Bisley Live event happened (despite a poor turnout apparently only about 10000 for the whole weekend!)

The Pheasant shooting season has started

and I'm sure a lot more that I've missed.

Bisley Live

Bisley Live starts tomorrow. This is the first show of it's kind to be held at Bisley (about time too). It's going to be a bit like the game fairs but on a smaller scale I would imagine. With more emphasis on shooting and less on arts and crafts (as most "game fairs" seem to doing these days) it should appeal to shooters more despite being smaller.

It will be the first game fair where people will be able to try different rifles etc too, and with fairly reasonable entry fees it should be a good show.

Gate open at 7am and the show starts at 9:30am.

E-Petitions

The government has launched it's new e-petitions website on which anyone in the UK can create and/or sign a petition. If any petitions get more than 100,000 signatures they have to be debated in Parliament. Here are a couple of shooting related one that you may be interested in looking at:

Finally got round to reading this August's Target Shooter. I'm still not sure about the new layout. This one might be cleaner but I don't think it's as easy to read. Anyway there are a couple of interesting new products in there.

First is the Lenspen Hunter Pro Kit. A small kit for keeping your lenses clean. I don't know about you but I always find the cloths supplied with scopes attract grip faster than anything. These pens a great, and at £15 from Tim Hannams I think I'll be investing in one.

The other is a rain cover for an Aim Field Sports Drag bag. Whilst they are fairly water resistant they do soak it up after a while. Mine got drenched at the fly shoot. I wonder if they'll bring one out for the 60" bag? Currently it's only for the 50".

Borris Bans Children from Shooting Events

In the 2012 Olympic ticket giveaway Boris Johnson has banned any of the tickets being given away to children for fear of backlash from the anti-gun lobby.

Personally I thought he had more guts than that. It can only be a good thing to let children see how guns are supposed to be used in a responsible way. How do these people think this rubbish up:

New UK F-Class Website

As well as the the new Target Shooter website GB F-Class have launched a new website too.

The new GB F-Class website is also much more professional and user friendly (I can actually access it without all the warnings that the old freewebs site flagged up).

All New Target Shooter

I've been wondering why Target Shooter's August edition was late this month, and here's the reason:

Target Shooter Online

They've launched a brand new website with a new magazine layout too.

I'm not sure about the new mag layout yet but I'm sure it will grow on me. The new website however is definitely much better. Easier to navigate, more information and looks more professional.

Holy Smoke

I saw that a UK company did this as a one off for a gamekeeper a few years ago but now a company in the USA is offering it as a service.

When you die you can have your ashes made into ammunition:

IR Thermometer

Excessive barrel temperature can reduce  accuracy, increase copper fouling, and increase barrel wear. Using a cheap IR thermometer such as this one from Maplin can help you keep track of your barrel's temp. Small enough to keep in your range bag and it may save you some barrel life.

Great for load development too. It will enable you to make sure your barrel is at the same temperature for all your groups.

Case Trimming Gadget - The Worlds Finest Trimmer

Nice little gadget on reviewed 6mm-BR this morning - The Worlds Finest Trimmer.

I hate trimming cases so if this does everything it says on the tin I may have to invest in one (or a couple since they are calibre specific). Hopefully they'll bring out a Mk.2 which takes inserts or something.

Available here.

Ultra Long Range Review of Android Shooter App

Another good post on 6mm-BR about the Android Shooter App. Sounds like a great app, almost sounds good enough to make me think about getting an Android phone instead of my iPhone.

I particularly like the Kestrel Bluetooth feature. I wonder if it works in real time? I doubt it but that would be really good.

Gun Handling Tips

Different shooting positions for shooting off a bench or prone:

Free Recoil : Only your trigger finger and possibly your thumb from your firing hand touch the rifle. The rifle recoils in the bags until it contacts your shoulder after an inch or so of recoil. If firing with thumb contact also apply light, consistent pressure with your firing hand thumb usually on the back of the trigger guard.

One Handed Firm Hold: Full, firm but consistent contact with the firing hand and shoulder. The non firing hand can be used to support the butt by making a fist and placing it beneath the butt or if using a rear bag It allows you to reach around and adjust the rear bag.

Two Handed Firm Hold:  Same as for the one handed method only this time the non firing hand supports the forend.

How you hold your rifle also depends, to a great extent, on the following:

1. Stability: If the position isn’t stable, then you aren't going to shoot well. Because of the amount of body contact with the ground and the low center of gravity prone is the most stable position.

2. Durability: If you change your position even slightly between one shot and the next it will affect your accuracy therefore, the position has to be durable. A properly fitting stock will help maintain position. Ideally, your cheek should never leave the comb during the string and your position must be as close to naturally looking strait forward as possible.

3. Comfort: You shouldn't feel any pain or discomfort whilst trying to mintain your postion. If you are not comfy it will affect the stability and durability of your shooting position.

Shooting Tips:

  1. Concentrate on your trigger contol. The trigger must be squeezed gently straight back; any twisting, pushing or moving side to side will ruin accuracy. Practice by dry firing with snap caps. Practicing in the dark may help you concentrate more on your actual trigger technique.
  2. Slow your breathing and heart rate as much as possible. There is a natural pause in your breathing after you have exhaled. I always time my shot to coincide with this pause and try not to think about it too much, just do it.
  3. Maintain and memorise your cheek weld, it must be consistent. Your head shouldn't be leaning over to one side, as above the alignment must be as close to naturally looking strait forward as possible.
  4. Don't fire too many shots in one go. Once fatigue starts to set in accuracy will deteriorate. This will also allow your barrel to cool.
  5. When shooting with a bipod push forward slightly on the rifle to improve stability.
  6. Use a sling. Even a simple carry sling wrapped around your non firing hand will improve stability in most positions.
  7. Practice! There is no substitute for trigger time. Competition and advice from others is the quickest way to learn. Get out there and try different shooting styles and positions and you'll soon lear what works for you.

Refurbish Your Brass

Here's an interesting new service that's being offered in the UK. Refurbish your old brass by having it annealed. At £23 per hundred it makes it quite attractive compared to new brass prices, and if you've ever tried to anneal your own brass, you'll know how time consuming and how much of a pain it can be.

Target Shooter App

The July issue of Target Shooter is now available as an App. May and June are available free but future editions will be 59p which is still very cheap for such a great mag. The online versions will still be available free.

Simple Tactical Bolt Handle Modification

The Bolt Lift from KRG is a quick and simple way to give your rifle a Tactical Bolt Handle. It may look a bit plasticy but if you don't like it just take it off and at $28 its cheap too.

There's a brief write up of it here, with more to follow and some pics of the installation.
